Tavis Smiley’s delivery of the annual MLK lecture is one of those Brown events that I feel lucky to have attended. Mr. Smiley is smart — wicked smaht — provocative and insightful. He challenged listeners, black and white or whatever, to reconsider how each one of us (Mr. Obama included) thinks about how we live the message that Dr. King preached. Love, no matter the injustice, just because. Hope, no matter what the obstacle. How can we honor the man without living the message?
I keep looking into the eyes of the young man — holding a Tavis-autographed program from the lecture — what is he hoping to hear?

Tavis Smiley signs autographs and chats after the Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture at Brown University on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at 5 p.m. in the Salomon Center for Teaching, De Ciccio Family Auditorium.
